Wednesday, January 25, 2023-On August 9th, 2022, over 15 million Kenyans woke up from their nests and headed to polling stations to elect their fifth President of the country.
According to
the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), there were more
than 44,000 polling stations across the country and there were only four
presidential candidates.
The four
were; Azimio La Umoja Coalition Supremo, Raila Odinga, Kenya Kwanza Alliance
presidential candidate, William Ruto, Roots Party candidate, Prof. George
Wajackoyah and David Mwaure of Agano Party.
Like the
four hunters waiting on who will kill the prey, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati
announced Ruto as the man who killed the bear and took its carcass home for
feasting.
The Man from Sugoi beat all the odds and
emerged the winner and Raila Odinga who enjoyed the support of the incumbency,
came second.
On September
13, 2022, Ruto took the oath of office and pledged to fulfill all his campaign
promises.
However
five months after assuming power, Ruto seems to be still on a political honeymoon
since he has done nothing productive to appease hordes of ‘hustlers’ who came
out to elect him.
The Sh 50
billion Hustler Fund he had promised Kenyans turned out to be a farce since
many received less than Sh 1000.
On taxation,
the Man from Kamagut seems to be in a
self-destruction mode since he has promised to spy on Kenyans Mpesa records and
tax them.
The spying
and taxation on Mpesa transactions will be Ruto‘s powder keg since many Kenyans
especially low cadre use this mode to transact on their businesses.
Removing subsidies
on basic commodities like Unga and fuel seems to have made the cost of living
shoot to the roof and this has made Raila Odinga look like the messiah to Kenyans
who rejected him five months ago.
If Monday’s
Raila rally at the historic Kamukunji Grounds is anything to go by, then Ruto
will face a dark storm in the next coming months and the hustler mantra may
become history like pirates of the Caribbean
