Tuesday, December 6, 2022-Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Vice-chairperson, Juliana Cherera has explained the reason why she resigned on Monday.
Cherera’s resignation came shortly after her colleague
Justus Nyang'aya resigned.
President William Ruto had previously suspended the two,
along with Francis Wanderi and Irene Masit, and established a tribunal to
investigate them.
In her letter to President Ruto, Cherera claimed that her
actions had been misinterpreted and that she had acted in accordance with her
obligations as the VC and commissioner.
According to Cherera's lawyer Danstan Omari, she resigned
because she couldn't stand before a jury whose verdict was already known.
Ruto has already appointed a tribunal to investigate,
Cherera, Nyang’aya, Masit and Wanderi for disowning the outcome of the August
9th Presidential election.
The tribunal to investigate the four is headed by chaired by
Justice Aggrey Muchelule.
Carolyne Kamende Daudi, Linda Gakii Kiome, Mathew Njaramba
Nyabena, and retired Colonel Saeed Khamis Sacred were also appointed to probe
the commissioners.
Kibet Kirui Emmanuel, Irene Tuntu Neboe, Peter Munge Murage
and Zamzam Abdi Abib will also be part of the tribunal.
