Sunday, April 2, 2023-Reports that the government would shut down the media in advance of the Azimio coalition's Monday protests were debunked by President William Ruto.
Ruto declared in his Sunday speech to the country that the
allegations claiming such a plot exists are false.
He stated his commitment to advancing media freedom and
rights and that he has no plans to stifle them.
"Kenya has made great strides. Also, we have heard that
the government intends to shut down the media. We won't turn off the media; in
fact, we back it, regardless of how objective it is, he declared.
"I don't believe the media was intentionally attacked. No
matter how biased their reporting may be, we think it should be allowed to
continue. The media has our full backing. Any activity that endangers the
safety of the journalists is not permitted."
