Monday, April 3, 2023-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has finally spoken after President William Ruto said he is ready to negotiate with the opposition leader, Raila Odinga and resolve the ongoing stalemate that has nearly crashed the economy of East Africa's biggest economy.
In his address to the nation on Sunday, Ruto who was accompanied by
Gachagua appealed for Odinga to work through parliament and not through
demonstrations.
“I urge my brother Raila Odinga and the opposition to call
off the demonstrations, and to give this bipartisan approach a chance for us to
take the country forward,” he said, urging Kenyans to remain peaceful and
law-abiding.
The instability in the country has prompted international
concern, with the United States and the United Kingdom, among other foreign
missions, calling for restraint.
Raila in his speech hours later said he has suspended the
demos to give dialogue a chance.
Gachagua, who is among Ruto’s hardliners who are opposed to
dialogue spoke after Ruto ceded to Raila's demands of reducing the cost of
living and addressing the electoral injustice.
In a tweet, the second in command said Kenya is a country
governed by law and violence and destruction have no place in the country.
“Kenya is a country of the rule of law. Violence and
destruction of property have no place in our country. It will never be allowed
under the leadership of the President @WilliamsRutonow or in the future,”
Gachagua tweeted.
