Monday, December 12, 2022-Siaya County Governor, James Orengo has sent a message to President William Ruto who is proposing an amendment to the Constitution to introduce an Office of the Opposition leader.
Ruto has already written a memo to Speakers of the National
Assembly and the Senate proposing several amendments to the Constitution of
Kenya to establish an office of the opposition leader.
But speaking on Sunday, Orengo, who is regarded as a
‘walking constitution’ by many Kenyans, accused Ruto of trying to sneak in
constitutional amendments using parliament to serve his selfish interests.
Orengo said though the calls for constitutional amendments
were welcome, the matter must be subjected to the referendum as dictated to by
the current constitution, adding that parliament was not the best avenue for
such changes.
Meanwhile, opposition leader, Raila Odinga has also opposed
plans to change the constitution and introduce the office of the opposition
leader saying the President has no powers to do so.
